Responsibilities

In this role you will deep-dive into world-changing technologies and solutions. TDK Ventures is focused on building unique and deep insights, and this relentless quest of quality insights is inspired by our commitment to making better bets on the future. From enabling sustainable energy solutions, to accelerating advanced materials breakthrough, to ensuring wider availability of sophisticated healthcare technologies, our guiding investment principle is supporting entrepreneurs who are dedicated to making the world a better place. This position’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Formulate and lead Deep Explorations taking inputs from both our team and TDK teams, in alignment with TDK long-term strategy, with goal to develop, articulate and present cogent hypothesis-driven Investment Theses and quality insights to TDK gained in these Deep Explorations.
  • Lead high-quality due diligences to present investment proposals that meets our investment processes and triple bottom line ambition, with Financial Principal inputs, and lead complex investment terms negotiation when needed as aligned with Legal Principal.
  • Deliver Deep Insights to TDK teams by authoring TDK Ventures Briefings on completion of Deep Explorations, and engage with TDK teams as facilitated and suggested by Startup Liaison.
  • Assist and support Engagement Team to deliver equal-win partnerships, and identify first-to-market solutions, between TDK companies and our portfolio companies.
  • Proactively expand network in global venture and startup ecosystem, building premium relationships to drive highly relevant projects deal flow, and facilitate due diligence of potential investments with credible co-investing partners relevant to each investment.
  • Proactively provide valued TDK Goodness to portfolio companies including helping with fundraising by crafting due diligence reports that can be shared under NRL letter with the right co-investing partners to build a dream syndicate for a given round and preparing for future rounds, partnerships, marketing, hiring support, and joining and contributing to sage advice and insights on boards.
  • Track portfolio and anti-portfolio to regularly to analyze operational and financial forecasts, business strategies of active investments, with Financial Principal inputs, ultimately to suggest timely actions when necessary.
  • Augment the TDK Ventures brand externally to be recognized as thought leader in our domains by contributing to insightful keynotes, roundtables and writing insightful thought leadership articles relevant to respective Deep Explorations, as aligned with Marketing Principal and Communication Principal.
  • Mentor Investment Analysts and Investment Associates to build their strengths and skills along the Investment Team scorecard.

Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation. The qualifications and working conditions listed below are representative of those required for the position.

  • PhD in the Sciences, Materials, Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical
  • 5+ years venture investment experience at Senior Associate or Principal level
  • Experience working with both startup ecosystems and large corporate entities
  • Experience in Business Development & Strategy
  • Possess an intellectual curiosity and understanding of diverse technologies with an ability to recognize and grasp critical materials science related technology capabilities and potentials
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast paced environment with multiple teams and functions and across multiple projects
  • Broad ability to perform strategic hypothesis brainstorming and evaluate product market fit and market sizing
  • Proficiency in modeling company financials and performing valuation analysis
  • Proficiency in deal structuring and negotiation
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent analytical, research, and organizational skills
  • Self-starter comfortable to contribute at a high level, and engaging with senior executives
  • Ability to work with different cultures across the world
  • Uncompromising work ethic and attention to detail with strong desire to always learn
